A Field Guide for Planning and Delivering High Quality Instruction
Grades 3 - 5
Students in the intermediate grades continue to gain experiences, background knowledge, and vocabulary as they read and understand literary and informational texts. Effective intermediate grade level teachers continue to promote the development of students’ listening, speaking, vocabulary, language, reading, and writing skills through meaningful and relevant activities. Students are provided ample opportunities to participate in rich, structured, interactive discussions with the teacher and peers in response to texts that are read aloud. Teachers create an environment conducive to learning, in which: children have access to a variety of print and digital materials to read; adjust the intensity of instruction based on student’s needs; link reading and writing activities, and create opportunities for sustained practice, through individual, partner, and group activities. (Burns, Griffin, & Snow, 1999) Teachers must intentionally plan and implement experiences to help students achieve learning goals.
